Small Island (2009)Tuesday, June 29th, 2010 |
As adapted from the bestselling 2004 novel of the same name by Andrea Levy, the miniseries Small Island observes the experiences of two very different married couples – one Jamaican, the other British – whose lives intersect at a point in post-WWII England when the relationship between their parent countries is about to irrevocably change. David Oyelowo and Naomie Harris star as Gilbert and Hortense, Jamaican immigrants who wed in a marriage of convenience and must battle bigotry and intense social rejection from the British on a daily basis. All that they really want is to be proud and happy subjects at the United Kingdom, when it would be easy to feel resentment and fury given the circumstances: many of their fellow countrymen are the descendants of Jamaicans who had been forcibly enslaved to the British Empire in an earlier era. Meanwhile, the couple’s married English landlords, Bernard (Benedict Cumberbatch) and Queenie (Ruth Wilson) are still rebounding from the experience of a lengthy wartime separation. Queenie projects an unusual attitude toward Gilbert and Hortense, given her lack of bigotry and unquestioning acceptance, but this ironically threatens to create more problems than it solves. Then there was Italia ’90 – The World Cup – a shot at redemption. But this was no ordinary World Cup and no ordinary time. The manager, Sir Bobby Robson, was under intense media scrutiny, and his team described as ‘donkeys’. Yet over six short weeks, through their heroic exploits they united a nation, coming within a heart beat of reaching the World Cup Final. Narrated by Gary Oldman, featuring match action – from Platt’s last-gasp winner against Belgium to the silky skills of Gazza and the cool finishing of Linekar – and previously unseen footage, this is the definitive story of England’s greatest footballing adventure on foreign soil….so far. Roy Chubby Brown: Bad Taste (2003)Friday, June 11th, 2010 |
For all his bad taste, Roy Chubby Brown is undeniably something of a phenomena. For over 20 years, he has built an extremely strong career solely on the basis of his live comedy shows and has done incredibly well at it. Early on, he marketed himself as the UK comedian who would use as much profanity as possible and make the most controversial, lewd, offensive and outrageous remarks. While that choice closed some doors, audiences loved his off colour, common man approach, and, as the legend goes, Chubby has only to post an announcement of an upcoming live performance and, through word of mouth, audiences come in droves. Here in Bad Taste, Roy Chubby Brown airs his opinions on subjects including Michael Jackson, dwarves, refugees, Bin Laden. Search keywords |
