Barbara Covett is an experienced and cynical teacher who is near retirement. She is barely tolerated by her acrid and less bright colleagues who know nothing of its private life which is mainly made up to take care Portia, his ageing cat and fact to spend the only countless hours. Barbara Covett est un instituteur chevronné et cynique qui est près de la retraite. Elle est à peine tolérée par ses collègues moins brillants et acerbes qui ne savent rien de sa vie privée qui se compose principalement du fait de s’occuper Portia, son chat vieillissant et le fait de passer des heures innombrables seules. Les seuls moyens qu’elle a trouvés pour prendre le bord de sa solitude désespérée écrivent dans son journal. Quand le Cerf Sheba, une femme plus jeune, attrayante, rejoint la faculté comme un enseignant d’art, Barbara la regarde de loin et a des choses rien que caustiques à dire dans son journal de ses vêtements et sa manière insouciante. En dépit de son dédain pour cette femme, Barbara se trouve l’aidant. Sheba répond en l’invitant au dîner à sa maison rencontrer le mari de conférencier de Sheba, qui est vingt ans son aîné et leurs deux enfants, une fille sexy et rebelle de 16 ans et un garçon plus jeune avec le Syndrome Downs. Au lieu de s’ouvrir à ces gens, Barbara les voit immédiatement comme la compétition à être battue dans la bataille pour l’attention de Sheba.
