Holmes is rented by Roland Carstairs to prevent the theft of the Star of the Rodésia, an enormous diamond had by the mother of Carstairs, Lady Margaret. To believe the diamond will be stolen in a train travel of London the Edinburgh, Holmes skillfully exchanges diamonds with the Lady Margaret while in his compartment. Shortly afterwards, Roland is murdered and the false diamond is stolen. The red herrings abound like Holmes helped by the Doctor. Watson and the Inspector Lestrade, discovers what the occultation of the murderer puts and it deducts that the Colonel of unscrupulous follower Sebastian Moran of the enemy of long term Moriarty is implicated anyway in the crime.
