An expedition is sent from Earth to Altair in the constellation of Aquilae (some 17 light years from Earth) to discover what happened to a colony of settlers on its fourth planet, Altair-4. What they discover is how and why an alien race of geniuses destroyed itself overnight while leaving their technology intact at some point in the distant, distant past.

While in the burial of the Countess Torlato-Favrini, his friend Harry Dawes and his acquaintance Oscar Muldoon remembers parts of his past. When rich Kirk Edwards rents the director and the writer of script Harry Dawes, they travel to Spain with the public relations Oscar Muldoon to see the ballet dancer of a night club Maria Vargas and to invite it for a test, since they need a new face for his following movie. Maria, an ingenuous woman with simple origins, is convinced for Harry in going to Hollywood and she becomes famous and an intimate friend of Harry and his fiancée Jerry. Along his guessed right career, Maria lives through personal dramas even the lack of the adaptation to his new life style, it is unable to love and she is disputed by the powerful millionaires Kirk Edwards and Alberto Bravano. When she finds noble and nice Count Vincenzo Torlato-Favrini in the Côte d’Azur, she believes that she found his charming prince and his life does a fairy tale to itself. But after the wedding, she sees that the castle of his Dogsbody of sleep has done a pumpkin to itself.

But they continue to be killed, briefly before he can bring them in, and now somebody also wants him deadly.
