Liu Xing is a scholarship boy from China, newly arrived in Salt Lake City, a graduate student in cosmology, in Utah to study in Professor Reiser’s prestigious program. Back in China, Liu Xing’s parents are proud of him, and he dedicates himself to fulfilling their hopes. All the graduate students in the program work on projects that extend and further Reiser’s model of the origins of the universe. Liu Xing does well until his own theories move him away from Reiser’s. Will Reiser and the department recognize Liu Xing’s brilliance? Can the young man’s benefactor, Joanna Silver, intercede?

A small group of teen girls in 1692 Salem, Massachusetts caught in an innocent conjuring of love potions to catch young men are forced to tell lies that Satan had invaded them and forced them to participate in the rites and are then forced to name those involved. Thrown into the mix are greedy preachers and other major landowners trying to steal others’ land and one young woman (Ryder) infatuated with a married man (Day-Lewis) and determined to get rid of his innocent wife (Allen). Arthur Miller wrote the events and the subsequent trials where those who demanded thier innocence were executed, those who would not name names were incarcerated and tortured, and those who admitted their guilt were immediately freed as a parable of the Congressional Communist witch hunts led by Senator Joe McCarthy in 1950’s America.

The town of the big whisky is full with normal people who try to lead quiet lives. Cowboys try to make a life. Sheriff ‘of little ones Bill’ tries to build a house and to keep a clumsy order. The town whores just try to pass. Then some cowboys cut a whore. Dissatisfied with Bill’s justice the prostitutes put a plentiful gift on the cowboys. The plentiful gift draws a young gun for which to itself as the ‘Schofield child’, and the ageing murderer William Munny charges. Munny made amends for his young woman, and has raised grain and two children in peace. But his woman is away. Farm life is hard. And Munny uses in it nothing. Thus he calls his old partner Ned, sattelt his usual troublemaker, and rides from to kill once again, the lines between heroism and roguery, man and myth smearing.

So nennt er seinen alten Partner Ned, sattelt seinen gewöhnlichen Nörgler, und reitet von, noch einmal zu töten, die Linien zwischen Heldentum und Schurkerei, Mann und Mythos verschmierend.
