A rural clergyman in 19th century England tells Durbeyfield, a simple farmer, that he is descended from the illustrious d’Urberville family — now extinct. Or maybe not. Durbeyfield sends his daughter Tess to check on a family named d’Uberville living in a manor house less than a day’s carriage ride away. Alec d’Urberville is delighted to meet his beautiful “cousin” and seduces her with strawberries and roses. Actually Alec has gotten his illustrious name and coat of arms by purchasing them. Tess too takes up the game of illusion when she finds, loses and finds again her true love Angel.

Relay leader Gerry Burton is sent to a quiet land village to recover from the effects of an airplane misfortune and to be nursed back to the health by his nice sister Joanna. Because they are new to the community, they are shaken to receive an anonymous, sexually detailed poison ballpoint pen letter. They find later that other village nobility has been sacrificed by the same crank author, and the woman of the priest sends after her friend Miss Marple in hope for putting outside the culprit. If a woman of a lawyer apparently takes poison after the receipt of especially evil news, Miss Marple supposes that the letters are a camouflage for a little bit more evil-announcing. If a house maidservant is found, demanded to death, she knows that she is right.
