An unemployed alcoholic Native American Indian lives on a trailer park with his wife and two children. Convinced that he has nothing to offer this world, he agrees to be tortured to death by a gang of rednecks in return for $50,000.

A young man (who is the legendary Don Juan?), comes to New York in search of his lost love. Feeling like he has nothing to live for, he attempts to commit suicide from atop a billboard. Dr. Mickler, (played by Marlon Brando), is a soon retiring psychiatrist who helps Don Juan (Johnny Depp), come to his senses. He brings the costumed boy to the psychiatric hospital , in hopes of helping Don Juan find his identity. The doctor works with him for ten days, in which Don tells his life story. Mickler begins to believe that the young man is truly Don Juan, but the rest of the staff doesn’t agree. The doctor knows that the only way out for Don Juan, is to pretend he’s an average boy whose fantasy got the best of him.

A gang of forty motorcyclists, the Black Rebels Motorcycle Club, gate-crash a legitimate motorcycle race. They are eventually thrown out, but one of the gang steals the second prize trophy and gives it to their leader, Johnny. The gang then ride into Wrightsville, where they race up and down the main street before piling into Bleekers – the local bar. The owner of the bar is happy to let the bikers spend their money, so does not support the sheriff’s attempt to address any disturbances. Stuck in town following an accident to a Black Rebel, Johnny falls for the sheriff’s daughter and tries to impress her with the trophy. When a rival gang, The Beetles, ride into town, trouble is just around the corner.

As workers are turned against each other, Terry Malloy inadvertently participates in the murder of fellow longshoreman Joey Doyle. Union boss Johnny Friendly orchestrates the murder along with other illegal dockside activities, aided by Terry’s brother Charley. Terry begins to feel pangs of conscience. When Joey’s sister Edie sees more in Terry than he sees in himself and Father Barry urges him on, Terry reassesses his past and begins to regain responsibility for his actions.

Most everyone in town thinks that Sheriff Calder is only a puppet of the oil rich man Val Rogers.
