Joe, young tramp without roots, finds the work in a barge that travels between the Glasgow and Edinburgh, had by East and his wife Ella. One afternoon they discover the corpse of a young woman who floats in the water. Accident? Suicide? Murder? Since the police officers investigate and the suspect is detained, we discover that Joe knows more than he is stopping in. Gradually we learn of the past relation of Joe with the dead woman.
