Z is just another ant in a colony of millions, around the individuality fighting. He falls in love with princess Bala, and persuades his Krieger-Ameise-Freund-Weber to switch places with him for one day, so that he can see again princess Bala. The result of it throws Z in a bigger adventure than he one day dreamt possibly.

Wenn sie die Maske rechtzeitig nicht aufschließt, wird ihre Gamasche weit geöffnet gerissen. Sie überlebt, aber ihr Zellgenosse tut nicht. Durch eine Reihe von Rückblenden erfahren wir von mehr Opfern, und von der fast erfolgreichen Festnahme des Spaltsäge-Mörders, der seine Opfer nicht wirklich tötet. Statt dessen findet er Wege, sie entweder sich selbst, oder einander töten zu lassen, und er denkt das komplette ‘Spiel’ vollkommen ohne andere Wege. Oder so würde es scheinen.
