The cop of New York John McClane, who was a cop for 11 years, has just arrived at Los Angeles the day before Christmas. For six crossed months, the woman Holly de John and their two rascals LUCY MCCLANE and John McClane Jr lived in Los Angeles without John. In New York, the Holly had a great work which was transformed into career and the Holly was promoted to a powerful position in the Society Nakatomi. Promotion asked for the Holly to move to Los Angeles to work in the Place Nakatomi, one 40 building of history. John stayed in New York because he did not think that the Holly differentiates him in Los Angeles and that she would come by creeping her behind in New York, therefore John thought that there was no reason to wrap the things for movement in Los Angeles. A driver of limousine called Argyle drives John to the Place Nakatomi and John heads in the 30th floor, where a Christmas party goes on. John enters an argument with the Holly in the office of his colleague muttering the medicament Harry Ellis because the Holly uses its name of girl Gennero instead of the name MCCLANE on its plate in its office. The holly leaves the room to give a speech. While John is in the office himself, John regrets that argument arrives. Some minutes later, a group of German terrorists led by grunts Gruber and his man of right hand Karl enters the building and gets each the hostage from the 30th floor. John is capable of avoiding being taken the hostage because Grunts and his men even do not know that John is in the building. John heads on the upper floors, which are in building still. Grunts gets the boss Joseph Yashinobo Takagi de Houx from an office, wherever Grunts request Takagi gives him the computer encoded key which will allow Grunts and his men to begin opening the safe of the building therefore they can steal 640.000.000$ in obligations from the bearer negotiable which are in the safe. Takagi refuses to collaborate with Grunts, therefore Grunts kill Takagi and John is witness. Grunts said that his expert of technology Theo to begin working on fact to accept the safe opened and Theo thinks that two or three hours will be needed to make him. John tries frantically to find a way to alert LAPD, by realising that the main telephone lines in the building were cut. As soon as the policemen really arrive, them if avér to be incompetent under the order of arrogant second-in-command Dwayne T. Robinson, therefore he is as high as John to save the hostages.

John est resté à New York parce qu’il n’a pas cru que le Houx le distingue à Los Angeles et qu’elle viendrait en lui rampant en arrière à New York, donc John a pensé qu’il n’y avait aucune raison d’emballer ses choses pour le mouvement à Los Angeles. Un conducteur de limousine appelé Argyle conduit John à la Place Nakatomi et John se dirige au 30ème plancher, où un parti de Noël continue. John entre dans un argument avec le Houx dans le bureau de son collègue grognant le médicament Harry Ellis parce que le Houx utilise son nom de jeune fille Gennero au lieu du nom McClane sur sa plaque dans son bureau. Le houx quitte la pièce pour donner un discours. Pendant que John est lui-même dans le bureau, John regrette que l’argument soit arrivé. Quelques minutes plus tard, un groupe de terroristes allemands menés par Hans Gruber et son homme de main droite Karl entre dans le bâtiment et prend chacun l’otage au 30ème plancher. John est capable d’éviter d’être pris l’otage parce que Hans et ses hommes même ne savent pas que John est dans le bâtiment. John se dirige aux étages supérieurs, qui sont en construction encore. Hans prend le patron Joseph Yashinobo Takagi de Houx à un bureau, où Hans demande que Takagi lui donne la clé codée informatique qui permettra à Hans et ses hommes de commencer à ouvrir le coffre-fort du bâtiment donc ils peuvent voler 640.000.000$ dans les obligations au porteur négociables qui sont dans le coffre-fort. Takagi refuse de coopérer avec Hans, donc Hans tue Takagi et John en est témoin. Hans dit que son expert de technologie Theo pour commencer à travailler sur le fait de recevoir le coffre-fort s’est ouvert et Theo croit qu’il faudra deux ou trois heures pour le faire. John essaie frénétiquement de trouver une voie d’alerter le LAPD, en se rendant compte que les lignes téléphoniques principales dans le bâtiment ont été coupées. Dès que les policiers arrivent vraiment, ils s’avér être incompétents sous l’ordre de sous-chef arrogant Dwayne T. Robinson, donc il est à la hauteur de John pour sauver les otages.
