It is a Psammead (expressed by Eddie Izzard), a fairy of ancient, ugly and irritable sand the children find one day in a secret beach in the wife’s house of his uncle. This grants a desire to them per day, lasting up to the sunset. But they soon learn that it is very difficult to think about really prudent desires, and each one obtains them in unexpected difficulties. The magic, the children find, it can be so awkward as it is attractive.
