Plot Summary:
At the beginning of 19no century, the Napoleón forces controlled most of Europe. In Russia, one of few countries was not triumphing yet, the army prepares to confront the Napoleón troops in Austria. Between the soldiers they are Nicholas Rostov (Jeremy Brett) and Prince Andrei Bolkonsky (Mel Ferrer). Pierre Bezukhov (Henry Fonda), a friend of the intellectual and Andrei’s faker who “knows what is correct, but it still does incorrectly,” is not interested in clashes. Pierre’s life changes when his father dies, leaving an enormous heredity. He is attracted to Natasha Rostov (Audrey Hepburn), Nicholas’s sister, but it yields before baser desires and marries the flat Princess, materialistic Helene (Anita Ekberg). The marriage quickly ends when Pierre discovers the real nature of his wife. Andrei is captured and later liberated by the French, and he turns to house only for glance to his wife to die in the childbearing. During a visit to the country a few months later, Pierre and Andrei are again. Andrei sees Natasha and won the love falls, but his father will only allow the marriage if they postpone it for one year. While Andrei is far in Poland in a military mission, Natasha is drawn to Anatole Kuragin (Vittorio Gassmann), a scoundrel and libertine. Pierre says to Natasha of Anatole’s past before she could escape with his lover with him. Napoleón (Herbert Lom) invades Russia. Pierre visits Andrei just before the battle, and observes the battle that it continues. Traumatized for the butcher’s shop, he swears of he kills Napoleón himself.
