Plot Summary:
Harvey Pekar is the clerk of file in the hospital VA place. Its reciprocal actions with his colleagues give a relief of monotony and their debates cover everything from the music to the decline of American culture to new tastes of jellybeans and of life itself. At home, Harvey fills his days of reading, writing and fact to listen to the jazz. Its flat is filled with thousand books and MICROGROOVE RECORDS and it erodes regularly the shops of economy of Cleveland and the sales of garage for more, by savouring the rare joy of 25 hundred find. It is in one of these sales of trash that Harvey meets Robert Crumb, an artist of greetings card and a music enthusiast. When, some years later, Crumb finds international success for its underground comic strips, idea that comic strips can be a form of valid art for the adults inspires Harvey to write its own drawn tape mark. An admirer of authors of naturalist as Theodore Dreiser, Harvey makes his American Splendour a not emotional, true record of his life of working class, ” warts and all” me the portrait. First published in 1976, the comic actor earns the glory-worship of Harvey throughout 1980s and leads him finally to sardonic Joyce Barber, a partner in a shop of comic strip of Delaware who put an end in ups be the true soul mate of Harvey as they know the strange derivatives of the stature of publicity-worship of Harvey.
