Plot Summary:
On the oriental coast of New Zealand, the people Whangara believe that his presence there goes back thousand years or more to an alone forefather, Paikea, who avoided the death when his overturned canoe mounting on horseback to the shore to the back of a whale. Since then, the Whangara chiefs, the first-born one, always male, have been always considered to the direct Paikea progeny. Pai, a 11-year-old girl in a tribe of patriarchal New Zealand, believes that she is destined to be the new chief. But his grandfather Koro is forced for the tradition to choose a male leader. Pai loves Koro more than anybody in the world, but she must fight against him and thousand years of the tradition to realize his destination.
En la costa oriental de Nueva Zelanda, la gente Whangara cree que su presencia allí se remonta mil años o más a un antepasado solo, Paikea, que evitó la muerte cuando su canoa volcada montando a caballo a la orilla al dorso de una ballena. A partir de entonces, los jefes de Whangara, siempre el primogénito, siempre varón, han sido considerados a los descendientes directos de Paikea. Pai, una muchacha de 11 años en una tribu de Nueva Zelanda patriarcal, cree que ella es destinada para ser el nuevo jefe. Pero su abuelo Koro es obligado por la tradición a escoger a un líder macho.
